Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the work of making a company readable, understandable, and citable by the systems that now answer buyers directly: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Copilot.

A results page shows ten links and lets the buyer choose. An answer shows three names and does the choosing. That is the whole change, and it moves the competition upstream: from being the best option among ten, to being one of the three a machine is confident enough to name.

Confidence is the operative word. An engine does not skip a company for being bad. It skips it for being unverifiable. Capabilities locked inside a PDF, certifications as a scanned image, a spec sheet that exists only as a design: none of it can be asserted, and what cannot be asserted does not get cited.

Make the site machine-readable

Rendering parity so an AI crawler sees what a browser sees, structured data on the pages that carry real specifications, and a robots policy that decides deliberately which AI crawlers are welcome rather than leaving it to a default nobody chose.

Write what can be cited

A direct answer in the first sentence, a question as the heading, and evidence instead of adjectives. Numbers with a date and a source, certifications with their validity, sectors actually served. A page of superlatives is a page an engine has no safe way to quote.

Take a dated baseline

A fixed list of the prompts your buyer would really type, run against each engine, recorded with the date, the answer, and which source was cited. Without that first snapshot there is no honest way to claim later that anything improved.

Measure the crawlers, not just the rankings

GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User leave a trace in the server logs. That trace is the difference between believing you are visible to AI and having the evidence. It also separates a training crawl from a live retrieval triggered by a real person mid-conversation.

What nobody can promise you.

No agency can guarantee a position inside a generative engine. These systems are not deterministic: the same question asked twice can return different names, and the model behind the answer changes without notice.

What can be promised is the work and the measurement: a baseline with a date, the technical and editorial changes that make a company citable, and a repeat measurement against the same prompts. If a proposal promises you a fixed spot in ChatGPT, the problem is not the price. It is that the thing being sold does not exist.
