A purchasing manager in Chicago needs a new supplier of precision castings. She asks ChatGPT for five qualified suppliers that can ship to the United States. Then she asks Copilot to compare them. A buyer in Monterrey does the same thing in Spanish. A buyer in Toronto reads a Google AI Overview. Your factory has the capacity, the certifications and a good price. But your name is not in the answer, so you are not on the shortlist, and nobody tells you. Many Chinese manufacturers check their AI search visibility from China, get unclear results and decide the channel does not matter. That check looks in the wrong place. The buyer is in Chicago, Monterrey or Toronto. Visibility has to be measured there.

What does AI search visibility mean for an exporter?

AI search visibility is the chance that an AI assistant names your company when a buyer in your target market asks for suppliers. For an exporter, it means that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot or Google AI Overviews, used in the United States, Canada or Mexico, can find your company, understand what you make and recommend you with confidence.

AI search visibility is not a ranking position. Generative engines do not give the same answer twice, so every result is a dated snapshot.

Chinese industry sees the same shift. On September 10, 2026, Fenghuang Tech described how, for Chinese brands that sell abroad, being cited by AI is replacing the Google ranking as the first barrier. Interest is growing on Google too: monthly searches for "geo 优化" went from 170 to 390 between September 2025 and August 2026, according to Google Ads Keyword Planner (volumes are fixed ranges, not exact averages).

Why should you measure from the buyer's market, not from China?

Your buyers use Western engines, so the test must happen where your buyers are. Some of these assistants are not officially available in mainland China, so a check from China is not a reliable picture of what a buyer in Chicago sees. Measure from the target market, in the buyer's language.

Results also change by market. In a measurement SWM made on September 9, 2026, 15 of 20 commercial agency queries in the United States showed an AI Overview, while none of 6 similar queries in Spain showed one. For background on how buyers use these tools, read how industrial buyers use AI to find suppliers.

Why are marketplace listings alone not enough?

A marketplace listing proves that you sell something. Your own English website proves who you are. An AI engine that recommends a supplier needs one trusted source that confirms the name, products, certifications and contact details. A marketplace page cannot do that alone:

  • You do not control the page. The platform decides the template, the text limits and what appears next to your listing, often a competitor.
  • The engine sees many similar pages. Hundreds of listings share the same layout and product words.
  • Your evidence has no home. Test reports, capacity and quality systems need space and structure.
  • The rules can change. A platform can change its design or its crawler access at any time.

Keep your marketplace listings as corroboration. But they should point to an English website that you own. If the United States is your first target, this guide on manufacturers expanding to the US covers the wider plan.

What do Western AI engines need before they name a supplier?

An AI engine names a supplier when it can identify the company, understand its offer and confirm it with other sources. For an exporter, five conditions matter most.

Is your company name the same everywhere?

Use one official English company name on your website, every marketplace, LinkedIn, YouTube and trade directories.

Many exporters have a transliterated legal name, an English brand name and one or two trading company names. A buyer may understand that these are one business. An AI engine often does not, so your best evidence is split across several names. Choose one name, explain the legal name once on your About page and repeat the main name everywhere in the same spelling.

Are your specifications written in the buyer's language?

Your website should answer practical buyer questions in the buyer's words:

  • MOQ: the minimum order quantity, per product line.
  • Lead time: for samples, first orders and repeat orders.
  • Certifications: the ones your buyer's market and industry expect, named exactly as the buyer writes them.
  • Incoterms: which terms you offer, for example FOB or DDP, and from which port.
  • Tolerances and materials: with units in inches and millimeters where your buyer uses both.

Put this information in HTML text and tables, not only in PDF catalogs or images. Fenghuang Tech gives the same advice.

Can AI crawlers read your website?

Check access before you write new content. AI crawlers are of two types. Live answer crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User, Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User) fetch pages when a buyer asks. Training crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended, CCBot) collect data to train models.

Blocking live answer crawlers makes you disappear from the answers. Blocking training crawlers is a business decision. A firewall can block them even when robots.txt allows them; Cloudflare has blocked AI crawlers by default on new domains since 2025. Test by requesting your pages with each real user agent.

Also check JavaScript. Many AI crawlers read the server HTML and do not run JavaScript, so product data that appears only after JavaScript runs may be invisible to them.

Does your website use structured data?

Google's official guide, Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search, says that optimizing for AI Overviews and AI Mode is SEO. Google's AI features use the same ranking and quality systems as Search, and you do not need special formats for AI.

Structured data helps machines understand what is already true on the page. It does not create visibility alone, and it must match the visible text. This guide to schema markup for manufacturers explains which types to use.

Do other websites confirm what you say?

An AI engine trusts a claim more when independent sources repeat it. Fenghuang Tech recommends presence on Reddit, LinkedIn and YouTube. For industrial buyers, add trade directories, associations and trade publications in the target market, each with the same company name and a link to your website.

Why does Mexico need Spanish, not machine translation?

Mexican buyers search and ask AI assistants in Spanish, so an English page often does not match their question. A machine translated Spanish page is not enough either. It often uses technical terms and phrases that a buyer in Mexico does not write.

Localize instead of translating:

  • Use the technical terms that Mexican engineers and purchasing teams use.
  • Put a direct Spanish answer at the top of each page.
  • Offer WhatsApp and business hours in the buyer's time zone.
  • Keep the same company name in both languages, and link the two versions correctly.

The same logic applies to the rest of Latin America. Fenghuang Tech calls it semantic localization instead of literal translation. For how Mexican manufacturers approach buyers in the United States, read nearshoring marketing for Mexican manufacturers. For the markets SWM covers, see our markets.

How do you measure AI visibility from the buyer's market?

Measure with a fixed set of buyer questions, asked in the target market and the buyer's language, on dated snapshots, and read the results together with brand searches and inquiries.

Use these steps:

  1. Write 20 to 40 buyer questions. For example: "Which manufacturers in China can supply stainless steel valves to the United States?"
  2. Run them from the target market. Use someone or a connection located in the United States, Canada or Mexico, in the buyer's language.
  3. Record each snapshot. Date, time, engine, companies named, sources cited and whether your site was cited.
  4. Repeat on a fixed schedule. Compare snapshots over months, not days.

SWM judges the channel with four measures, always together: citations by engine and time window; share of the answer in buying queries; brand searches in Google Search Console; and forms, WhatsApp and CRM records matched by date and time. Referral sessions from AI tools cannot judge the channel.

Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report with Copilot citations, the only free source of citation numbers. Google Search Console is more limited: its API does not separate AI Overviews or AI Mode as a search type. SWM tested every variant against its own property, and all returned errors.

SWM's own data shows why. From February 22 to August 19, 2026, the Bing AI Performance report showed 2,007 Copilot citations of Sell with Marketing. They sent almost no visits; the effect appeared later as brand searches and "direct" traffic. This is a correlation in one company, not a proven cause. The full details are in what we measured on AI visibility.

What should your website contain for each buyer question?

  • Which suppliers in China make this product for the US market? — What your site must contain: A product page with the English product name, materials, applications and target markets; Where it should also appear: Marketplaces, LinkedIn company page, trade directories
  • What is the MOQ and lead time? — What your site must contain: MOQ and lead time per product line, in HTML text; Where it should also appear: Marketplace listings, product catalogs
  • Is this supplier certified for my industry? — What your site must contain: Certification names, scope and dates on a dedicated page; Where it should also appear: Certification body listings, LinkedIn
  • Can they ship DDP to Texas or Ontario? — What your site must contain: Incoterms offered, ports and shipping notes; Where it should also appear: Marketplace profiles, FAQ pages
  • ¿Qué proveedor surte esta pieza en México? — What your site must contain: A localized Spanish page with Mexican terms and contact options; Where it should also appear: Spanish LinkedIn posts, Mexican directories

What are the most common mistakes?

  • Testing from China only. It does not show what a North American buyer sees.
  • Using several company names. Your evidence splits across them.
  • Hiding key data in PDFs and images. Put it in page text.
  • Blocking AI crawlers by accident. Check the firewall, not only robots.txt.
  • Machine translating Spanish pages. The page does not match the buyer's questions.
  • Judging the channel by referral traffic. Use the four measures.
  • Expecting a fixed position. Read trends, not single results.

Frequently asked questions

What is GEO optimization (geo 优化)? GEO, or generative engine optimization, is the work of making your company easy for AI engines to find, understand, cite and recommend. For an exporter, it means a clear English website, consistent company names, buyer-language specifications, open access for AI crawlers and confirmation from third-party sources in the target market.

How do I get recommended by ChatGPT as a supplier? No one can guarantee a recommendation, because ChatGPT does not answer the same way twice. You can increase the chance: publish clear product data on your own English website, use one company name everywhere, allow live answer crawlers and build presence on sites that buyers and engines already trust.

Is a marketplace store enough for AI search optimization? A marketplace store helps, but it is rarely enough alone. The engine needs one authoritative source that confirms who you are, what you make and how to contact you. Your own website is that source. Marketplace listings then work as corroboration that points back to your main company name.

How often should I check my AI visibility? Run the same fixed set of buyer questions on a regular schedule, for example once a month, from the target market. Record the date and time of every snapshot. Read the trend over several months together with brand searches and inquiries, because a single test can change from one day to the next.
